A happy new year, everybody. In horseracing, new years are full of hope, with the birth of foals in the early months, promising three-year-olds appearing as soon as winter is over, and two-year-olds going through their paces later in the season.
The December 2016 newsletter has been delayed to an extraordinary extent, for reasons that are too banal to report in full here.
After an interval of four years, two Czech-trained horses will run in the UK, at Cheltenham on Friday, December 9th. Czech-trained horses run very frequently nowadays in Italy, France, Slovakia, Germany and Poland, and occasionally in Hungary, Switzerland and Sweden. However, the long journey to the most famous steeplechase course in the world is not only a rarity, but an event that arouses great interest in the Czech horseracing community.
The two Czech-trained horses that will run at Cheltenham on December 9th (Friday) have already been “on the scene” since the end of last week.
On a bright but chilly afternoon at Kolesa last Saturday, our season came to an end. There is not much protection from the elements at Kolesa, and a combination of grog, mulled wine and winter clothing protected the racegoers. Here is an exhibition of photos of headwear from Kolesa. October 2016 was autumnal. There was a fair amount of rain, the days got shorter and the afternoons got chillier. This year, like most years, we have had very little soft going, and when it finally arrived, in mid October, the season was almost over.
