A year has passed, and again there is a squad of Czech-trained horses that has set out in an attempt to win the Swedish Grand National and other races in the meeting at Strömsholm.
The Swedish Grand National and the Swedish Champion Hurdle are the main events in the meeting at Strömsholm on June 11th, and the Czech Republic will be well represented.
According to the Prague Velká Chuchle racecourse website, the second running of the Agrofert Velká Národní (Grand National) Steeplechase will be on Sunday, August 29th, for the Josef Váňa Cup. As far as I know, no race conditions have yet been published.
Recent monthly newsletters have been mainly about Czech racing management, and about the standoff between the racecourses and the Czech Jockey Club. However, the season is well under way, and Derby day will arrive in less than four weeks. It is now high time to give due attention to horses, jockeys and trainers.
Wroclaw racecourse will join the Crystal Cup crosscountry series next year, but is putting on a preparatory race this year on June 19th.
According to information provided by ČTK, after an auction held on May 27th, president of the Jockey Club of the Czech Republic, Jiří Charvát, has become the majority shareholder of Most racecourse.
The first qualification race for the 2016 Velka Pardubicka was run at Pardubice on May 21st. There were 19 runners, including almost all of the fancied Czech-trainer runners for the big race, which will be run on Sunday, October 9th. The course was in good condition, though the going, which was officially 4.0 (good) was a bit harder than is ideal for steeplechasing.
Two Czech-trained horses made the long journey to Stockholm to participate in the final race day at Täby racecourse in Stockholm. Both Taurito and Catch the Cash are trained by Radim Bodlák and were ridden by Josef Bartoš. Both Czech horses were well beaten.
Czech horse racing will be in full swing this weekend. On Thursday evening, there will be the Kooperativa race day at Prague Velká Chuchle. This will consist of 4 more or less low-category handicap races on the flat. The first flat race is at 5.30 p.m.
