Sunday is Gran Premio day at Merano in northern Italy. In addition to strong contenders trained in France, Germany and Italy, there is strong Czech representation.

Despite his saddles going missing, and despite drawing mainly mediocre horses to ride, the greatest Greek jockey, Panagiotis Dimitsanis, was full of smiles at the European Jockeys Cup meeting at Prague Velká Chuchle, as is recorded by Hellas Horseraces Weekly Newsletter of September 5th (in English)
Very few people in Czech horseracing would deny that the betting at our racecourses is very unsatisfactory – and many would say that “very unsatisfactory” is an understatement. Betino, the only company that offers off-line odds at our racecourses, offers poor odds, has low turnover and high overheads, is heavily taxed, and has managed to contribute only a small amount to Czech racing.
James Fry reports that French trainer Guillaume Macaire is at the moment planning to run Virtus D'Estruval in the Velka Pardubicka. This horse was among the entries for the Velka Pardubicka that were made in May.
James Reveley, who finished fourth in the Velka Pardubicka on Maljimar in 2012, has ridden the horse in his last three races. It is hoped he may ride here on October 8th. Virtus D'Estruval finished a very creditable 3rd in his last start, which was in the Crystal Cup race at Craon, in France, on September 3rd.
After the European Jockeys Cup meeting in Prague on September 2nd, in which most of our top horses took part, there will be no top flat races in the Czech Republic for about three weeks.
